Planes are built to handle far more shaking than you’ll ever feel in the cabin, and pilots see it coming on radar long before you do. Understanding what’s actually happening under those wings does more for your nerves than any breathing exercise ever will.

What Turbulence Actually Is
Turbulence is just air that isn’t moving smoothly, pockets of rising and sinking air, shifting wind speeds, or air currents bumping into each other. The plane doesn’t fall, it moves with the air the same way a boat moves with waves. What feels like the bottom dropping out is almost always the plane shifting a few feet, sometimes less, in response to that shifting air. It looks and feels dramatic from your seat with a drink sloshing in your cup, but the actual movement is far smaller than your body is telling you it is.
Jani’s Tip ✈️: I remind clients that flight attendants walk the aisle during plenty of turbulence that has passengers gripping their armrests. If it were actually dangerous, that cart wouldn’t be rolling down the aisle at all.
Why It Feels Worse Than It Is
Humans are wired to feel unsteady footing as a threat, it’s the same instinct that makes a stumble on solid ground feel alarming even when you catch yourself immediately. Add in the fact that you can’t see what’s causing the movement, you’re thirty five thousand feet up with no reference point, and your brain fills that blank with worst case scenarios instead of the boring truth, which is that this happens on nearly every flight and the plane is built for far more than what you’re feeling.
Commercial aircraft are tested to withstand stress loads well beyond anything turbulence actually produces. The wings are designed to flex, on purpose, because a rigid wing would be the actual problem. That flex you might see if you’re sitting near the window during a bumpy stretch isn’t the plane struggling, it’s the plane doing exactly what it was engineered to do.
The Different Types
Turbulence isn’t all one thing, and knowing the type behind the bump can make it feel a lot less mysterious. Thermal turbulence happens when warm air rises unevenly off the ground, common on hot days or over certain terrain, and it usually settles once you climb higher. Mechanical turbulence comes from air flowing over mountains or buildings, disrupting smooth airflow, which is why flights near mountain ranges can get bumpy even in clear skies. Wake turbulence is caused by the air disturbance left behind another aircraft, which is why planes maintain distance during takeoff and landing. And clear air turbulence, the kind that catches everyone off guard because there’s no storm or cloud to explain it, comes from shifting jet stream winds at cruising altitude, and it’s the one type pilots sometimes can’t see coming on radar, which is exactly why the seatbelt sign stays on even during smooth stretches.

What Actually Helps
The single most useful thing you can do is keep your seatbelt buckled anytime you’re seated, loosely is fine, but buckled, because the moments turbulence catches people off guard are almost always when they’ve unbuckled to grab something from the overhead bin. Choosing a seat over the wing, closer to the plane’s center of gravity, tends to produce a smoother ride than seats near the tail. And if your nerves are the real issue rather than the physics, focusing on something steady, a podcast, a conversation, pressing your feet flat on the floor, does more than staring at the wing waiting for it to prove something’s wrong.
