Beach trips look simple to pack for. Swimsuit, sunscreen, done, right? Except the sunscreen leaks, the towel takes up half the bag, and you land somewhere that legally requires reef-safe formulas and you brought the wrong kind. This one keeps it to what actually matters.
Sun Protection
☐ Reef-safe sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher, packed in more than one bottle
☐ SPF lip balm
☐ Wide-brim hat
☐ Polarized sunglasses
☐ Aloe vera gel or after-sun lotion, because someone always gets a little too much sun
☐ A rash guard or swim shirt, for reef snorkeling or just skipping the reapply-every-two-hours math
Swim & Beach Bag Essentials
☐ At least two swimsuits, so one is always dry
☐ Quick-dry or sand-free towel
☐ Waterproof phone pouch
☐ Insulated water bottle
☐ Beach bag with a zip or waterproof compartment for wet items
☐ Cash or a card in a waterproof pouch, not loose in your bag
Clothing
☐ Cover-ups and sarongs, they double as beach wraps, lunch outfits, and picnic blankets
☐ Flip-flops for the sand, real shoes for anything else
☐ One dressier outfit for dinner, even beach towns have a restaurant that expects real clothes
☐ A light layer for overly air-conditioned restaurants
Carry-On Must-Haves
Pack these like your checked bag might not show up on time.
☐ One swimsuit
☐ Sunscreen
☐ A change of clothes
☐ Any prescription medications, full supply
☐ Chargers and valuables
Toiletries & Extras
☐ Leave-in conditioner or anti-frizz product, saltwater and humidity have plans for your hair
☐ Bug spray, beaches near mangroves or dusk hours are not kind
☐ A dry bag or ziplock for a wet swimsuit on travel day home
☐ Entertainment for downtime, a book, a downloaded show, whatever gets you off your phone’s data plan
Common Mistakes
☐ Packing one swimsuit and spending the trip wearing it damp
☐ Bringing regular sunscreen to a destination that legally requires reef-safe formulas, Hawaii and parts of the Caribbean enforce this
☐ Checking sunscreen loose in your suitcase, pressure changes make bottles leak, seal everything
☐ Packing a full-size cotton towel that takes up half your bag and never fully dries
☐ Five outfits for a three-day trip and no second swimsuit, flip that ratio
