☐ Someone willing to navigate without an attitude
A road trip feels simple right up until you’re forty minutes in and realize nobody packed napkins, the phone charger is a USB-C in an iPhone household, and someone’s already asking “are we there yet” in a tone that suggests they mean it as a threat. This list covers what actually needs to be in the car, not just what needs to be in the trunk. There’s a difference, and it matters the second you hit the highway.
Before You Leave the Driveway
☐ Oil, tires, and fluids checked (yes, even for a “quick” trip)
☐ Full tank of gas
☐ Spare tire and jack confirmed present and functional
☐ Roadside assistance number saved in your phone
☐ Registration and insurance card in the glove box
☐ Route mapped, with offline maps downloaded in case of dead zones
☐ Someone at home knows your route and rough arrival time
Documents & Money
☐ Driver’s license and any needed ID for minors
☐ Insurance and roadside assistance cards
☐ Cash for tolls, parking, and the one gas station that’s cash only
☐ Physical copy of your route or hotel confirmations, in case your phone dies at the worst possible moment
In the Car, Within Reach
☐ Phone chargers, and the right kind, for every device on board
☐ Portable battery pack
☐ Reusable water bottles for everyone
☐ Sunglasses
☐ Small trash bag or car trash can
☐ Wet wipes or hand sanitizer
☐ Blanket or jacket, even in summer, because gas station AC has opinions
☐ Paper towels
Snacks & Drinks
☐ A mix of salty and sweet, because morale matters
☐ Something that isn’t going to melt, crumble, or stain the upholstery
☐ Cooler with ice packs if you’re bringing anything perishable
☐ Gum or mints for the inevitable “how much longer” conversations
Entertainment
☐ Downloaded playlists, podcasts, or audiobooks, since signal is not guaranteed
☐ Tablets or devices fully charged before you leave, not while you’re already on the road
☐ Headphones for anyone who doesn’t want to hear your road trip playlist on repeat
☐ A few old-fashioned options, cards, a notebook, a road trip bingo sheet, for when screens run out of battery
For the Kids (and Honestly, Some Adults)
☐ Travel pillow and blanket
☐ Motion sickness remedy if it’s ever been an issue
☐ Extra layer of clothes within reach, not buried in a suitcase
☐ A “boredom bag” packed separately from the rest of the luggage
Common Mistakes
☐ Packing snacks in the trunk instead of the car, so every stop turns into a full excavation
☐ Charging devices in the car instead of before you leave, which works fine until three people need the same outlet
☐ Assuming you’ll have signal the whole way, right up until you don’t
☐ Skipping the pre-trip car check because the drive “isn’t that far”
☐ Packing like it’s a flight instead of a road trip. You have a trunk. Use it, but don’t turn the back seat into a storage unit you can’t see out of
