Before You Go: Travel Insurance Questions to Ask
Jani’s Ask-Before-You-Buy List:
☐ Read past the price and into the actual coverage
☐ Checked what counts as a “pre-existing condition”
☐ Confirmed what “Cancel for Any Reason” actually means
☐ Asked how and when claims get paid
☐ Stopped assuming the cheapest policy is the smartest one
Travel insurance policies are not created equal, and the difference usually shows up at the worst possible moment: when you actually need to file a claim. Asking the right questions before you buy is how you find that out now instead of later. Here’s what to ask.
Coverage Basics
☐ What exactly does this policy cover: trip cancellation, trip interruption, medical, evacuation, baggage, or all of the above?
☐ Is there a maximum payout per category, and is it enough to actually cover this trip?
☐ Does the policy cover the full cost of the trip, or just certain expenses?
☐ Is “Cancel for Any Reason” included, and if so, what percentage does it actually reimburse?
Medical & Emergency
☐ Does this policy cover medical treatment abroad, and up to what amount?
☐ Does it cover medical evacuation, and how far will it take you (nearest adequate hospital vs. home)?
☐ How does it handle pre-existing conditions, and is there a look-back period?
☐ Will my regular health insurance work internationally, or does this policy need to cover that gap entirely?
Cancellation & Interruption
☐ What counts as a covered reason for cancellation? (Illness, death in the family, work conflict, weather?)
☐ Is there a deadline for purchasing the policy to lock in the best cancellation terms?
☐ Does the policy cover cancellation due to a named storm, or only after it’s officially named?
☐ What happens if I need to come home early? Is the return trip covered too?
Baggage & Delays
☐ What’s covered if my luggage is lost, delayed, or damaged?
☐ Is there a per-item limit that might not cover higher-value belongings?
☐ Does the policy cover a delay reimbursement for meals or a hotel if my flight is significantly late?
The Company & the Claims Process
☐ How does this company handle claims: online, phone, both?
☐ What’s the average claims processing time?
☐ Are there reviews or complaints specifically about how claims get paid (not just about buying the policy)?
☐ Is there a 24/7 emergency assistance line, and is it actually staffed when I’d need it?
Happy travels!
XOXO, Jani
Jani’s Tip: The cheapest policy is rarely the smartest one. I’ve seen travelers save forty dollars on a policy and then lose thousands because “Cancel for Any Reason” only reimbursed 50%, or because their pre-existing condition wasn’t covered under the look-back window. Ask these questions before you buy, not after you need to file.
