Cruises have a funny way of feeling far away right up until they’re suddenly a week out and nothing’s booked, packed, or printed. This timeline breaks the countdown into manageable chunks so nothing gets left for the last minute, because the last minute on a cruise doesn’t come with a lot of flexibility.
2 to 3 Months Before
☐ Confirm passport is valid for at least six months past your return date
☐ Book shore excursions, popular ones sell out earlier than you’d think
☐ Review your cruise line’s luggage and prohibited items policy
☐ Purchase travel insurance if you’re planning to
☐ Start a packing list so you’re not starting from scratch later
4 to 6 Weeks Before
☐ Confirm final payment is made and documents are issued
☐ Check if any vaccinations or health documents are required for your ports
☐ Arrange transportation to and from the port
☐ Confirm any dining or specialty reservations onboard
☐ Order any last minute cabin accessories, like magnetic hooks or a non-surge power strip
2 Weeks Before
☐ Print or download boarding documents and luggage tags
☐ Confirm your all aboard times for each port on the itinerary
☐ Check the weather for your entire route
☐ Set up your onboard account or pre-register payment if your line allows it
☐ Start laying out what you’re packing, even if you’re not packing yet
1 Week Before
☐ Pack medications and essentials into your carry on, not checked luggage
☐ Confirm pet, house, or mail arrangements at home
☐ Charge every device and pack the chargers with them, not separately
☐ Print a physical copy of your reservation and boarding pass as backup
☐ Notify your bank and phone carrier of travel dates if needed
Day Before
☐ Finish packing and weigh checked bags if your line has limits
☐ Attach luggage tags to every checked bag
☐ Set out what you’ll wear to the port, separate from what’s packed
☐ Confirm arrival time at the port matches your boarding window
☐ Get a good night’s sleep, embarkation day is longer than people expect
Common Mistakes
☐ Booking excursions the week before instead of months out, then settling for what’s left
☐ Waiting until the last few days to check passport expiration dates
☐ Packing medications in checked luggage that won’t be available for hours
