☐ All aboard time written down, not just remembered
☐ Cash in small bills for the ports that don’t love credit cards
☐ Ship issued ID or key card in hand
☐ Sun protection, because port days have a way of turning into all day sun exposure
☐ A buffer built in, because “cutting it close” and “missing the ship” are closer together than they look
Shore excursions are the whole reason a lot of people book a cruise in the first place, and they’re also where the trip can go sideways fastest if the timing isn’t planned out. The ship does not wait, ports don’t run on your schedule, and the difference between a great excursion day and a stressful one usually comes down to a little planning before you ever step off the gangway.
Before You Book
☐ Decide between ship sponsored excursions and independent tours, and know the tradeoffs of each
☐ Check the ship’s all aboard time for every port before booking anything independent
☐ Read reviews for independent tour operators, not just the first search result
☐ Confirm cancellation policies in case weather or ship delays change your plans
What to Bring Ashore
☐ Ship key card or ID, required to get back on board
☐ Cash in small bills, not every port vendor takes cards
☐ Copy of your excursion confirmation, printed or on your phone
☐ Sunscreen and a hat, port days add up to more sun exposure than expected
☐ Reusable water bottle
☐ A small daypack for anything you pick up along the way
☐ Motion sickness remedy if your excursion involves a boat or rough terrain
Timing & Safety
☐ Know the exact all aboard time and set a personal buffer of at least 30 to 60 minutes earlier
☐ Independent excursions should return well before the ship sponsored ones, since the ship won’t wait for a tour it didn’t book
☐ Save the ship’s port agent contact number if your line provides one
☐ Let someone else in your group know your excursion plan in case you’re separated
If You’re Going Independent
☐ Choose a meeting point that’s easy to find again if your group splits up
☐ Screenshot a map of the port area in case you lose signal
☐ Confirm transportation back to the ship is part of the plan, not an assumption
☐ Have a backup plan if your excursion runs long
Common Mistakes
☐ Booking an independent excursion that returns right at the all aboard time with no buffer
☐ Assuming every port takes credit cards
☐ Leaving the ship without your key card or ID
☐ Skipping sunscreen because “it’s just a few hours”
☐ Forgetting that the ship leaves with or without you. It genuinely will

I tell every client the same thing before a port day. If your excursion is independent, plan to be back at least an hour before the ship sails, not right on time. Ships don’t do dramatic last minute waits, they do dramatic last minute departures.
