Embarkation Day Checklist
Jani’s Pier Side Priorities:
☐ Passport or required ID in hand, not in a checked bag
☐ Boarding documents printed or downloaded
☐ Carry on packed with what you actually need for the first few hours
☐ Arrival time that isn’t “whenever we feel like it”
☐ Patience, because embarkation day involves a line no matter what
Embarkation day is the one day of the cruise where showing up prepared actually saves you real time, not just peace of mind. Your cabin isn’t ready the second you board, your checked luggage won’t show up for hours, and the difference between a smooth start and a stressful one usually comes down to what’s in your hands versus what’s buried in a suitcase somewhere below deck.
Documents to Have On You
☐ Passport or government issued ID, per your cruise line’s requirements
☐ Cruise boarding pass and luggage tags, printed or on your phone
☐ Proof of vaccination or health documents, if required for your itinerary
☐ Credit card for onboard account setup
☐ Any visa requirements for ports along the way
Before You Leave for the Port
☐ Confirm your arrival window matches your assigned boarding time
☐ Luggage tags attached to every checked bag
☐ Prescription medications packed in your carry on, not checked luggage
☐ A printed copy of your reservation, just in case technology has other plans
What Goes in Your Carry On
☐ Swimsuit, if you want to hit the pool before your cabin is ready
☐ A change of clothes
☐ Phone charger
☐ Medications and anything you can’t go a few hours without
☐ Snacks, since lunch isn’t always immediate the second you step aboard
☐ Reusable water bottle
At the Terminal
☐ Have documents out and ready before you reach the counter
☐ Expect a security screening similar to the airport
☐ Know that checked luggage will be delivered to your cabin later, not handed to you at check in
☐ Take a photo of your cabin number and deck once you know it, easier than memorizing it
First Few Hours Onboard
☐ Locate your muster station and review the safety information
☐ Set up your onboard account if it isn’t already linked
☐ Grab lunch, since dining rooms and buffets are usually open before cabins are ready
☐ Explore a little before the ship gets crowded with everyone else’s first day energy
Common Mistakes
☐ Packing medications in checked luggage that won’t arrive for hours
☐ Arriving hours before your assigned boarding time and ending up in an even longer line
☐ Forgetting that your phone may not have signal once you’re aboard until you’re out of port
☐ Assuming your cabin will be ready the moment you step on the ship
☐ Skipping the muster drill because “it’s probably fine.” It’s mandatory, and it matters
🚢 Jani’s Tip
Pack a swimsuit in your carry on every single time. Your cabin won’t be ready, but the pool usually is, and there’s no better way to start a cruise than already in the water while everyone else is still standing in line.
Happy travels! XOXO, Jani ❤️
