The App You Probably Already Qualify For
Every year I talk to clients who’ve applied for Global Entry, paid the fee, scheduled the interview, and waited months for approval, all so they can skip a customs line. Good move if international travel is a regular thing for you. But if you fly internationally once or twice a year and just want a faster way through customs without the paperwork, there’s a free option sitting in the app store that most people have never heard of.
Mobile Passport Control, usually shortened to MPC, is authorized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. It lets you submit your passport information and customs declaration on your phone before you ever reach an officer. No fee. No application. No interview. Just download it, use it, and go.
Who Actually Qualifies
This is the part that trips people up, because it sounds too easy, and people assume there’s a catch.
Eligible:
- U.S. citizens
- Canadian citizens with a valid B1 or B2 visa
Not eligible:
- Green card holders
- Visa waiver program travelers
- Anyone traveling on a visa other than B1 or B2, if you’re Canadian
If you fall outside those categories, this app isn’t for you, and that’s fine, there are other options like Global Entry or just the standard line.
📱 Jani’s Tip: I get asked constantly whether MPC and Global Entry are the same thing. They are not. Global Entry gets you through a kiosk with your fingerprints and includes TSA PreCheck. MPC is a free app that speeds up the paperwork part of customs, but you’ll still walk up and talk to an actual officer. Different tools, different jobs, and there’s no reason you can’t use both if you have Global Entry already.
How It Actually Works
The process happens in the app before you even land, so the timing matters.
- Download the Mobile Passport app before your trip. It’s free, available for iOS and Android.
- Create a profile with your passport information and a photo.
- Once your flight lands back in the U.S. and you have a data or wifi connection, open the app and complete your customs declaration.
- Submit it. The app generates an encrypted QR code receipt.
- Follow the signs for Mobile Passport Control at the airport, which is usually a separate, noticeably shorter line.
- Show your passport and the QR code receipt to the CBP officer.
That’s the whole thing. No forms to fill out on the plane, no fumbling with a pen at 6am after an overnight flight.
Where It Works and Where It Doesn’t
MPC is only available at select airports, and only for international arrivals back into the U.S. It doesn’t help you at every airport, and it doesn’t do anything for outbound flights or connections that don’t involve re-entering the country. Before you count on it, check that your specific arrival airport participates. The list changes and grows periodically, so it’s worth a quick check before every trip rather than assuming last year’s airport list still applies.
