Cruise Packing Checklist

☐ Passport and cruise documents are in your hand, not your checked bag
☐ Swimsuit is packed in your carry-on, pools open before your suitcase does
☐ You’ve checked YOUR cruise line’s rules, not the ones from your last cruise
☐ Medications are with you, full supply, never checked
☐ You know what’s banned before security finds it for you
Cruising packs differently than flying does. Your suitcase might not show up in your cabin for hours, security screens like an airport, and every cruise line has its own idea of what’s allowed onboard. This checklist covers what actually matters, sorted so you’re not hunting through paragraphs to find it.
Documents & Money
☐ Passport (valid well past your return date) or required ID, kept on your person
☐ A photocopy or photo of your passport, stored separately from the original
☐ Cruise boarding documents, printed and saved to your phone
☐ Entry requirements checked for every port on the itinerary, not just your embarkation city
☐ Small bills for tipping and any port that doesn’t take cards
☐ Copies of prescriptions or a doctor’s note for medications, especially anything injectable
Embarkation Day Carry-On
Pack this like your suitcase might not show up until dinner, because it might not.
☐ Swimsuit and cover-up
☐ Sunscreen
☐ A full day’s supply of medication
☐ Phone charger
☐ A complete change of clothes
☐ A light jacket, cabin hallways and dining rooms run cold
☐ Any wine or champagne you’re bringing aboard (most lines cap this at one or two bottles per person, carry-on only, check yours first)
Clothing & Cabin Comfort
☐ Layers, the air conditioning has opinions
☐ Formal night outfit, if your line still does one, dress codes vary widely so check before you pack a ballgown you don’t need
☐ Reusable water bottle
☐ Motion sickness remedy, pack it even if you’ve never needed one before
☐ A lanyard or crossbody for your room key or sail card, cabin pockets don’t exist
Electronics & Cabin Fixes
☐ A power strip WITHOUT a built in surge protector, this exact rule changes by cruise line, verify before you pack it
☐ Magnetic hooks, cabin walls are steel and command hooks won’t stick
☐ Portable charger
☐ Entertainment downloaded ahead of time, ship wifi is slow and priced like a small vacation on its own
Leave These at Home
☐ Irons, steamers, and candles, fire risk, banned on nearly every line
☐ Extension cords (power strips without surge protection are the workaround, not these)
☐ Hard liquor, beer, and large coolers
☐ Drones, unless your line has given you written approval in advance
☐ Anything that reads as a weapon, including the “it’s just for the excursion” pocketknife
Common Mistakes
☐ Assuming your last cruise line’s rules carry over to this one, they don’t, every line writes its own list
☐ Packing medication in checked luggage, if the suitcase is late, so is your blood pressure prescription
☐ Bringing a full size iron “just in case,” it becomes ship property at security screening
☐ Checking entry requirements for your embarkation port only, and getting surprised at a stop that needed a visa
☐ Packing exclusively for formal night and forgetting sea days need clothes too
