My bottom line: if there is any chance you leave the country in the next five years, skip PreCheck and get Global Entry. It costs a little more and does twice as much.
Airport Security Doesn’t Have to Be This Confusing
If you’ve ever stood in a security line watching the lane next to you move like a NASCAR pit stop while yours crawls along like Friday rush hour, you’ve wondered what those people know that you don’t.
Then somebody mentions TSA PreCheck. Your cousin swears by CLEAR. Somebody else says no, you need Global Entry, and now there’s something called Digital ID? By the time everybody’s done “helping,” you’re more confused than when you started.
Here’s the secret: these programs aren’t competing with each other. They each fix a different bottleneck. Once you see which one fixes what, the choice gets easy.
Think of the airport like a concert. Somebody checks your ID at the door. Then you go through security. And if you’re coming back from another country, you stop at Customs before you head home. Every program on this list speeds up exactly one of those steps. That’s it. That’s the whole mystery.
TSA PreCheck: The Crowd Favorite
TSA PreCheck is the government’s trusted traveler program for airport security, and it’s the reason those people in the fast lane look so smug. TSA says 99% of PreCheck travelers wait less than 10 minutes at security.
Even better than the shorter line is what you get to keep: your shoes, your belt, your light jacket. Your laptop and your liquids bag stay in your carry-on. If you’ve ever watched a family of five unpack their entire lives into gray bins while balancing on one foot each, you already understand the appeal.
It runs about $77 to $85 for five years, depending on which enrollment provider you pick. That’s a little over a dollar a month. I’ve spent more than that on airport coffee.
Applying is easy. Fill out the online application, sit for a short in-person appointment, and you’ll get a Known Traveler Number, your KTN. Which brings me to the mistake I see constantly:
People get approved and then never add their KTN to their airline reservations. No KTN on the reservation means no PreCheck on your boarding pass, and no amount of sweet-talking the agent will fix it at the airport. Add it to your airline profiles once, then take thirty seconds before every trip to make sure it’s there. Thirty seconds at home saves you thirty minutes in socks.
Global Entry: My Favorite, and It’s Not Close
Global Entry is run by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and its job is getting you back into the United States after international travel without the soul-crushing Customs line. You use expedited kiosks or facial recognition instead, usually while the rest of your plane is still shuffling toward the back of the queue.
Now here’s the part too many people miss:
Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck.
Read that again. If you have Global Entry, you do not buy PreCheck. It’s already in there.
Global Entry costs $120 for five years. That’s a whopping $35 more than the top PreCheck price, for double the benefits. This is why, if you’re standing in my office asking which one to get, my answer is almost always Global Entry. Not “if you travel internationally every year.” If you might leave the country once in the next five years. One cruise. One trip to Mexico or Canada. One anniversary splurge in Italy. That’s enough to make Global Entry the smarter buy.
Two things to know before you apply. First, there’s a short interview with Customs and Border Protection after conditional approval. Bring your passport, answer a few questions, get fingerprinted and photographed, done in minutes. Second, processing time is unpredictable. Some approvals take two weeks, some take months. Do not apply fourteen days before your dream vacation and then send me a panicked message. Apply early. Months early.
CLEAR: The One Everybody Gets Wrong
CLEAR is not a government program. It’s a private company that verifies your identity with your eyes or fingerprints so you can skip the line where a TSA officer checks your ID. That’s the only line it skips. You still go through the scanner, and your bags still go through the X-ray. If you also have PreCheck, CLEAR walks you to the front and drops you into the PreCheck lane, which is why frequent flyers love the combination.
CLEAR is an annual membership, it’s the priciest option on this list, and it only exists at participating airports. Before paying full price, check for discounts through your airline, credit cards, or military programs, because they’re everywhere.
Who actually needs it? People who fly several times a month through big airports. For the once-or-twice-a-year vacation traveler? I’d spend that money on a nicer dinner at your destination.
Digital ID: The New Kid
Digital ID lets you verify your identity electronically at participating airports, using your state’s mobile driver’s license or your phone’s digital wallet. It’s fast, it’s optional, and it is not a replacement for your physical license or passport.
Always carry the real thing. Technology is wonderful… right up until your phone battery dies.
Traveling with the Whole Crew
Parents, here’s how the kid rules shake out:
- Children 12 and under ride through the PreCheck lane free with a PreCheck parent on the same reservation.
- Teens 13 to 17 can use the lane when the PreCheck indicator shows on their boarding pass. No indicator, no lane.
- Global Entry is different. Every single traveler needs their own membership to use the Global Entry lane, including the baby. But here’s the good news most articles skip: kids under 18 apply for FREE when a parent or legal guardian is a member or applying at the same time. That used to cost $120 a child. Now a family of four pays for two memberships instead of four. You’re welcome.
And for my seasoned travelers wondering if this is worth it “at our age”: honey, it’s worth it MORE. Nobody over sixty needs to be balancing on one foot in a security line, wrestling a shoe while strangers watch. Keep your shoes on and your dignity intact. That alone is worth the fee.
One more money tip: many travel credit cards reimburse the application fee for PreCheck or Global Entry, and some offer CLEAR credits. Check your card’s benefits before you pay out of pocket. You may already own this perk and not know it.
So Which One Should You Get?
One vacation a year, all within the U.S.? TSA PreCheck. Affordable, easy, done.
Any chance you leave the country in the next five years? Global Entry. This is my answer nine times out of ten.
Living in airports for work? Global Entry plus CLEAR. When you fly every week, minutes are money.
Fly once every five or six years? Save your money, sugar. Put it toward the trip.

The whole point of these programs isn’t the fast lane itself. It’s arriving at your gate with your blood pressure intact and enough energy left to actually enjoy where you’re going.
